Binissalem Car Show

Passion is contagious. The people who buy, restore, maintain, and drive old cars clearly have a lot of love for their vehicles, and it is great fun to see the fruits of their labors. Over the weekend every inch of available space around the main plaza was occupied by beautiful old cars.

This two tone Fiat stole my heart with its whimsical paint and roof mounted luggage.

Walking through the crowds with my 13 year old (soon to be 14!) I had a chance to tell little stories about different cars that I have learned over the years. I don’t have any super specialized knowledge, but I have picked up some fun details.

I started with the 1968 mustang (above) telling a little about how the mustang started the pony car segment of sports cars in America that was eventually added to by all the American auto companies.

We talked quite a lot about the fact that the US market rarely saw many of the interesting European cars made by Fiat, Seat, Renault, Citroen, Mini, and others. It was interesting to see a massive 1980s Buick station wagon complete with wood panels parked next to a fiat. The priorities of drivers and car makers in the US vs the rest of the world was pretty apparent.

There was a row dedicated to VW Beetles and Vans. In another section I found a lovely GTI in white.

I have always loved the 930 series Porsche 911. This Carrera RS is a really stunning example.

This was the third or fourth year of the show, so with any luck I’ll get a chance to attend again next year!
